When I explain IVF to patients, I start with this truth: success isn’t just about getting pregnant, it’s about having a healthy baby at home.

Better Laboratory Conditions

Think of embryo development like growing a delicate plant. Early IVF laboratories couldn’t maintain the precise environmental controls crucial for embryo health. Today’s specialised incubation systems mirror your fallopian tubes’ natural environment, maintaining exact temperature, humidity, and gas concentrations. This directly translates to healthier embryos and better pregnancy rates.

Day 5 Embryo Transfer

Instead of transferring embryos after 2 – 3 days, we now wait until day 5 when they reach the blastocyst stage. This requires patience, but by day 5, embryos have undergone crucial developmental milestones that help us identify which have the best chance of becoming healthy pregnancies.

The improvement has been substantial, what once required multiple attempts often now succeeds on the first try.

Genetic Testing (PGT)

Preimplantation genetic testing allows us to examine embryos’ genetic makeup before transfer, identifying those with the correct number of chromosomes. For patients who’ve experienced recurrent miscarriages or are of advanced maternal age, PGT provides both answers and hope. We can select embryos with the highest likelihood of resulting in healthy babies.

Time-Lapse Monitoring

Modern systems capture thousands of images throughout development, creating detailed movies of each embryo’s growth. We observe critical events like cell divisions without disturbing the embryos. This reveals patterns invisible to the naked eye, helping us identify embryos most likely to implant successfully.
